The small village of Lumphinnans sits between Lochgelly and Cowdenbeath. The pond lies behind the railway embankment and is accessed by passing below a bridge just beyond the astroturf pitches on Gagarin Way (named after the famous cosmonaut). A footpath tracks the water's edge but it is only possible to complete a partial circuit before the ground becomes too boggy. Views of the nearby hills appear.
On the way back, you can stay on the same side of the railway and take the path parallel to the embankment. This leads to a grass football field. Cut across and head for the changing cabin on the other side. The pitch formerly sat between two railway lines but the Cowdenbeath to Perth route was dismantled in 1970. The houses ahead of you were built on the trackbed and populated by residents of Gray Park village - which lay between Cowdenbeath and Auchtertool but was demolished to make way for the Mossmorran petrochemical plant. Once at the main road, turn left and left again at the roundabout to return to the centre of Lumphinnans.
