Greenock to Kilmacolm (6 miles)

Start at the sports centre in Bridgend Road, Greenock. Ample parking is available here. Pick up the tarmac path that follows the route of the old Princes Pier line towards Johnstone. The railway ran along a high ridge above Greenock and amazing views of the Clyde estuary soon appear. The high nine-arch viaduct across Devol Glen was demolished long ago and we must now descend to the floor of the valley and climb the steps on the other side. We are soon back on track and Greenock merges into Port Glasgow.

A modern peripheral housing scheme has swallowed up the trackbed at Mid Auchinleck but the deviations are well signed. The path now enters quiet open country and it's a pleasant ramble to Kilmacolm, where the old station has now been replaced by a residential development. Step on to the High Street to find a choice of refreshments. Regular buses run back to Greenock. Alighting at the football ground leaves just a short hike uphill back to the starting point.
