Letham Hill Wood (3 miles)
This walk takes place upon a high ridge of land and we begin at Dalgety Bay railway station. Ample car parking is provided here. Walking away from the station, cross the busy A921 and turn right. A short distance beyond the roundabout, still on the main road, a flight of steps is signed for Letham Hill Wood. This leads up into the trees and the path performs a couple of switchbacks before we reach the high ground. The terrain is heavily wooded but glimpses of the Firth of Forth can be caught through the trees, as well as views to the north.
Follow the stright-ahead route all the way along the ridge. Eventually we emerge from the tress and a grassy mound provides sweeping views of the firth. Continue forward and you will meet the fence around the abandoned and water-filled Prestonhill Quarry. A section is cut away, allowing access to the site. Proceed with great care as there is a sheer vertical drop from the cliffs. Several people have died here over the years so it's best not to go anywhere near the edge. A far safer option is to turn left when arriving at the quarry fence and take the path and staircase down to meet the Fife Coastal Path. After a short walk you can view the quarry at ground level. It is a captivating site. Return to the start by the reverse route, or go back along the coastal path to Dalgety Bay and work your way through the town. A hidden gem of a hostelry lies close to the railway station in the adjacent village of Hillend (now bypassed by the A921). The Hillend Tavern has real ales on tap and is a previous winner of Fife CAMRA pub of the year.
