Dundee Green Circular (9 miles)
The complete trail length is 25 miles and this leg starts at Discovery Point on the city-centre waterfront. Follow the shoreline for a mile towards the Tay Rail Bridge. Cut inland at the university playing fields and follow the pavement by the A85 all the way past the airport and Riverside Nature Reserve. Take the pedestrian underpass and follow the Green Circular signage up to the trackbed of the old Dundee to Newtyle Railway (closed in 1967). We leave the traffic behind (for now) and follow the rising gradient of the dismantled line.
The trail runs along Myrekirk Road past the Balgarthno Stone Circle and parallels the Kingsway West (A90) for a short stretch before ducking below. We cut through a small industrial estate and enter the vast Camperdown Park. The official route leads you by the impressive mansion and exits the park on the A923. Cross over and go into Templeton Woods. Upon reaching the residential fringes, it's worth making the short detour down to Clatto Reservoir (now rebranded as a nature reserve). The downward slope on the lengthy Laird Street is a pleasant way to round off today's wander. At the junction with Strathmartine Road, catch a bus back to the city centre (or walk the 2.5-mile straight-line course if you wish).
