Glasgow to Cambuslang (8 miles)
The Clyde Walkway officially begins at the point where the River Kelvin empties into the Clyde and the closest station is Partick. For the purposes of this walk we shall begin at Central Station. Head down Union Street towards the river and work your way upstream towards Glasgow Green. A point of interest is the People's Palace Museum and the attached Winter Gardens.
The museum features exhibitions on Glasgow city life and the Winter Gardens are housed within a spectacular Victorian glasshouse. Unfortunately at the time of writing, both buildings have been closed indefinitely due to structural concerns. On the edge of Glasgow Green is the West Brewery, a former textile factory now converted into a cavernous German-style beer hall. Several brews are made on the premises and an excellent menu is available. Tours can also be booked.
As we head further along the walkway, we pass the city sewage works, thankfully screened by a high concrete wall. Glimpses can be had of Shawfield Greyhound Stadium and Celtic Park. Eventually we pass under the M74 and approach Cambuslang where it is just a short walk to the High Street. There are frequent trains back to Glasgow from here.
PUB STOPS - The John Fairweather in Cambuslang is a must see. Wetherspoons have converted an old cinema and have left the circle intact, placing cardboard film-goers in a few seats. A few nice well-kept ales are available on tap. As for Glasgow, well you're spoiled for choice. The Crystal Palace is large Wetherspoons in Jamaica Street a short walk from Central Station. The range of beers is excellent.
