Bandeath Munitions Depot (4 miles)
This vast site occupies an area of land bounded by a loop in the River Forth. The depot was decommissioned in the early 70s but many buildings remain, as does the loading pier and crane. Ample parking is available in a large lay-by just outside the hamlet of Throsk on the A905.
Walk 500 yards along the main road in the Stirling direction and turn right into the Bandeath Industrial Estate. Follow the main access road, eventually passing a timber merchant. Stay on this course as the road bends towards the river and leads into the old military complex - now a massive sheep grazing area.
The buildings are arranged in regular rows and paths run between them. The contents have naturally been stripped out but just wandering around the place is an atmospheric experience. The backdrop of the Ochils just across the Forth adds to the ambience. Explore the site at your leisure and exit by the way you came in in or take the road at the opposite edge of the site.
An extra curio is the crane on the dilapidated pier in the far corner of the complex - obviously used for loading crates of ammunition on to waiting craft. It is not recommended that you try and access the pier as it is ruined.
