Ardrossan to Saltcoats (2.4 miles)
The train journey from Glasgow to Ardrossan Harbour takes around 45 minutes and offers a pleasant run through the Ayrshire countryside. After alighting, have a stroll around the Clyde Marina and take in the views of the Isle of Arran. Work your way along Princes Street through the town centre and branch on to the walkway running alongside South Beach.
Continue curving around the bay until the exit for Winton Street. Head inland to the junction with Hamilton Street where Cafe Melbourne has been serving the locals for decades. A short distance down Hamilton Street is the Basebowl - a ten-pin bowling arcade. There can't be too many of them left in town centres.
Further down the street is the Salt Cot - a Wetherspoons establishment offering a fine selection of ales. It is a short walk to Saltcoats railway station where services run back to Glasgow.
